ἰκνύς

ἰκνύς
ἰκνύς, -ύος
Grammatical information: f.
Meaning: `dust, ashes' (Cyrene); (Hp. Nat. Mul. 88).
Other forms: cf. ἴκνυον κονίαν, σμῆμα H. and ἰγνύς `id.' (Hp. Nat. Mul. 88).
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Formation like λιγνύς `smoke, soot'. Acc. to v. Blumenthal Hesychstud. 39 to IE seikʷ- `dry' (Pok. 894). Cf. W.-Hofmann s. ignia, which comes from Greek. The variation proves a Pre-Greek word. Fur. 118 compares λιγνύς (above), without referring to his p. 391 on λ\/0. (He further compares 298 λιγνύς with ἀλισγέω `pollute', which I find formally difficult).
